The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 1B’s East-West corridor of Lucknow Metro, extending from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, achieved a significant milestone with its approval by the Network Planning Group (NPG) during a crucial meeting held in Delhi on July 9, 2024.
This corridor spans 11.165 kilometers, comprising 4.286 kilometers elevated and 6.879 kilometers underground, and will include 12 stations—7 underground and 5 elevated. Key stops such as Charbagh, Aminabad, and Chowk are integral for connecting major locations in old Lucknow.
Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), emphasized the corridor’s pivotal role in enhancing urban transportation within Lucknow and integrating seamlessly with the existing metro network.
The NPG meeting, chaired by the Additional Secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, discussed various aspects including utilities such as water pipelines, transmission lines, and sewer lines. Considerations for protected monuments and multi-modal connectivity using the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan Portal were also addressed.
Representatives from key departments including Housing and Urban Affairs, Defence, Railways, Environment and Forests, and Finance participated, ensuring comprehensive planning and coordination.
Following this approval, the project now moves to the next phase at the Public Investment Board, awaiting final clearance from the Central Cabinet. The estimated completion time for the East-West corridor is projected at 5 years, with an estimated cost of Rs 58.01 billion, promising substantial improvements in transit efficiency and connectivity across Lucknow.
