Hindustan Zinc Limited has strengthened its long-standing partnership with Tata Steel to scale the use of EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc, in steel production, marking a significant step toward decarbonising the metals value chain.
Produced using renewable energy, EcoZen delivers over 75% lower carbon intensity than conventional zinc, with emissions of less than one tonne of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of zinc. Its adoption enables downstream industries to meaningfully reduce value-chain emissions, particularly in galvanised steel applications where zinc plays a critical protective role.
The collaboration is expected to support climate-aligned sourcing strategies while offering measurable sustainability gains. Use of EcoZen can help avoid nearly 400 kg of CO₂ emissions per tonne of steel galvanised, providing a clear pathway for reducing Scope 3 emissions.
Building on a two-decade relationship, the partnership reflects a strategic shift toward responsible material sourcing and greener industrial processes. As India accelerates its low-carbon transition, such innovations highlight how material-level interventions can deliver scalable impact across infrastructure, manufacturing, and energy sectors.
