Kerala Accelerates Port-Led Industrialisation Around Vizhinjam

Kerala is stepping up efforts to fast-track port-led industrialisation centred on the Vizhinjam International Seaport, with authorities advancing plans for land acquisition and infrastructure development across key districts. The initiative aims to transform the region into a logistics and industrial hub, boosting trade competitiveness and regional economic growth.

Officials confirmed that land acquisition has been accelerated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kochi, bringing the state in line with similar progress made in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The move is expected to create an integrated industrial corridor anchored by the Vizhinjam port, which has already attracted significant investment interest due to its strategic location on international shipping routes.

A detailed project report is currently being prepared to guide the development of logistics facilities, container yards, and supporting marine-land infrastructure. Authorities have also engaged consultants to ensure the plan is comprehensive and aligned with long-term economic objectives. The report, which will address connectivity, industrial clustering, and sustainability, is expected to be completed within a year.

Rail connectivity forms a critical component of the industrialisation drive. Plans include linking Vizhinjam port with Balaramapuram station through a 10.7 kilometre alignment that will feature a 9.4 kilometre tunnel. Estimated at ₹1,483 crore, the rail project is expected to see tendering begin this month, signalling concrete progress on the ground.

Industry observers note that the combination of port access, industrial facilities, and enhanced connectivity will generate significant demand for construction materials, particularly steel, while also stimulating employment and ancillary industries. By accelerating industrialisation around Vizhinjam, Kerala aims to position itself as a key logistics gateway on the country’s western coast, complementing national infrastructure ambitions and strengthening its role in global trade.
