India is set to launch its first hydrogen-powered train in May, marking a significant milestone in sustainable railway technology. The train, equipped with a 1,200-horsepower (hp) hydrogen engine, will become the world’s most powerful hydrogen train, surpassing other international models that typically operate at 600 or 800 hp.
Hydrogen-powered trains are hailed as a green alternative to diesel engines, offering a cleaner and more sustainable solution for rail transport. This development highlights India’s growing capabilities in advanced railway engineering and its commitment to sustainable innovation.
In addition to the hydrogen-powered train, India is advancing in high-power locomotive technology. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced the creation of a cutting-edge 9,000-horsepower locomotive in Dahod, Gujarat.
This locomotive is said to be highly sophisticated, with a design more akin to a data center than a traditional railway engine.
