The Greater Chennai Corporation has proposed multiple bridge projects to enhance connectivity, including new links between ECR and OMR and reconstruction of key bridges across the city.
To alleviate congestion, three steel bridges will connect East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) across the Buckingham Canal. These include links between Venkatesapuram and Elango Nagar, Maniammai Street and Veeramani Salai, and Arignar Anna Nagar and Pandian Salai, providing alternative routes for commuters.
Additionally, the corporation plans to demolish and rebuild several existing bridges to improve structural integrity and capacity. The Kodungaiyur Canal bridge connecting Tondiarpet High Road and Kadumbadi Amman Koil Street, as well as the Tamizhar Veedhi bridge in Anna Nagar, will be reconstructed. Carriageway expansion is also planned for better traffic flow.
Further projects include the reconstruction of bridges on Indira Gandhi 2nd Street and Kannagi Street in Anna Nagar. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to modernize Chennai’s infrastructure and ensure smoother commutes.
