Nestled in the picturesque Balinese village of Pererenan, Bawa House is a testament to sustainable, low-impact modern tropical living, designed by Stilt Studios. Completed in 2024, this 165 sq m house is the brainchild of the lead architect. The project transformed a once barren plot into a vibrant oasis using natural building materials and a lush tropical garden.

Bawa House stands on stilted foundations, respecting and complementing traditional Balinese architecture. This single storey structure preserves green spaces and minimises its ecological footprint, fostering a symbiotic relationship with the land. The house adheres to the studio’s ethos of environmental stewardship, utilising prefabricated elements and responsibly sourced materials. Emphasising wood for carbon storage, it enhances both sustainability and aesthetic appeal.

The construction employs a 3 x 3 m modular system with efficient steel structures, offering extensive customisation options. This method reduces construction time while maintaining quality control, minimising waste, and lowering the carbon footprint. The prefabricated approach blends innovative design with eco-consciousness, making the construction process efficient and environmentally friendly.

The minimalist family home includes a main living space, three bedrooms, and an office. Each room connects with the outdoors through large sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Elevated wooden walkways connect the buildings, extending living areas and providing long sightlines, enhancing the sense of openness.

The three buildings are positioned at varying heights, creating dynamic vertical spaces and enhancing visual interest. The spaces between the buildings are filled with trees and plants, making the house feel as though it is floating amidst greenery. The garden design creates a layered effect, with trees spiralling down to broad tropical leaves around the swimming pool. This lush garden attracts wildlife and creates a cooling microclimate during hot months.

Bawa House counters Bali’s high-density development, showcasing that modern family living can be achieved sustainably with minimal environmental impact. It serves as an oasis of calm in southern Bali, harmonising with its natural surroundings and setting a benchmark for future developments.
