The proposed Dhalbhumgarh Airport in Jamshedpur is being viewed as more than a transport project, it is increasingly seen as a potential catalyst for the economic and industrial revival of Jharkhand’s Kolhan region.
Jamshedpur, despite being one of India’s major industrial hubs, lacks a full-fledged commercial airport. Distance to Ranchi and transportation constraints continue to pose challenges for investors, industrialists, business travellers and tourists. The establishment of Dhalbhumgarh Airport is expected to directly impact industry, trade, tourism and employment across areas including Ghatshila, Musabani, Chakulia and Bahragora.
The Kolhan region has historically been significant for copper, gold and silver mining. During the British era, the Ghatshila–Musabani belt was among India’s leading copper-producing zones. Over time, mining production declined, industries weakened and the pace of regional development slowed. Today, as Jharkhand advances mineral-based industries and infrastructure development, the airport is seen as a vehicle for reversing this trend, potentially reviving closed mines, accelerating proposed industrial projects and attracting fresh investment.
The region’s strategic location near the Jharkhand–Odisha border further strengthens its case for industrial expansion. Local Member of Parliament Bidyut Baran Mahato has consistently championed the project before Parliament and concerned ministries, while progress in land acquisition and positive signals from the Central Government have raised optimism.
Experts note that the airport’s success will depend not just on infrastructure but on the simultaneous growth of surrounding industries, trade and tourism, making coordinated government and private sector action essential.
