JSW Plans 25 MN Tonne Steel Plant in Gadchiroli

JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal has announced plans to build a massive 25 million tonne integrated steel plant in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, positioning the region as an emerging steel manufacturing hub for India.

Jindal highlighted Gadchiroli’s strategic advantage due to its proximity to iron ore mines, which had remained largely inaccessible for years due to Naxalite activity. “Gadchiroli is a very potential area for making steel because of the proximity of the iron ore mines, which were blocked all these years because of the Naxalite movement,” he said. With mining now underway and the security situation significantly improved, Jindal described the region as a natural location for large-scale steel complexes.

The project’s timeline, however, remains tied to securing mining assets and raw material linkages. Jindal made clear that investment would move swiftly once those foundations are in place. “It will start as and when we get our mines and we can have the raw material security. Based on that, this investment will flow very quickly,” he said.

Beyond steel, Jindal touched on JSW Group’s growing push into electric mobility. The group is working on EV battery cell manufacturing in Nagpur, aligning with the government’s broader vision of reducing oil imports and accelerating India’s shift toward e-mobility. “The oil import that takes place should be restricted and people should convert to e-mobility. That will have long-term advantages to India,” he said.

On the macroeconomic front, Jindal acknowledged that ongoing Middle East tensions have created some headwinds for India’s industrial growth but was quick to frame it as temporary turbulence. He remained confident about India’s overall investment trajectory, pointing to healthy corporate balance sheets and accelerating capital expenditure across industries as key drivers of continued momentum.

Jindal also underlined the role of domestic manufacturing in preserving India’s foreign exchange reserves, noting that making in India itself is a meaningful contribution to reducing forex outflows, a point that ties directly into the government’s Make in India push.

With Gadchiroli poised to become a major steel corridor, JSW’s planned facility could significantly reshape the industrial landscape of Vidarbha and contribute meaningfully to India’s steelmaking ambitions.
