ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has achieved a global first at its Hazira Pipe Mill, successfully manufacturing EQ70 ultra-high-strength welded pipes using Submerged Arc Welding technology, now certified by the American Bureau of Shipping for offshore and marine applications. Equivalent to API 5L X100Q, the EQ70 grade delivers a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa, engineered for deep-water pipelines and jack up rig leg bracing systems traditionally dependent on imported seamless pipes from European suppliers.
The breakthrough, developed over nearly 12 months of process optimisation, production trials, and rigorous ABS compliance testing, positions AM/NS India among a very limited group of producers globally capable of manufacturing specialised welded pipe of this specification domestically, directly supporting India’s push to reduce import dependence in high-specification offshore steel.
With plans to supply EQ70 pipes to international offshore markets already in motion, and hydrogen transportation pipe grades under development at the same facility, AM/NS India is increasingly repositioning itself from a volume-driven producer toward a specialised, future-ready steel solutions partner for global marine and energy infrastructure.
