A temporary bridge constructed across the Bharathapuzha at Thirunavaya for the Mahamagha Mahotsavam has come under regulatory and judicial scrutiny, bringing the focus sharply on safety at large religious gatherings. The structure was recently inspected by engineering and police officials following directions from the Kerala High Court, with the inspection report to be submitted to the court. Technical instructions were issued to the organisers, emphasising the need to strengthen safety measures and ensure structural stability.
Earlier, the revenue department had halted construction of the bridge, which is intended to connect the riverbank to a sandbank in the middle of the river. A stop memo was issued after concerns were raised, and subsequent attempts to resume work were again stopped by authorities, prompting the organisers to seek legal intervention.
Meanwhile, the festival has seen a steady increase in pilgrim inflow, including devotees arriving in specially arranged buses from neighbouring states, underlining the importance of safe, well-regulated temporary infrastructure at the venue.
