Steel Dispute Threatens to Delay Chilla Flyover Project

The Chilla elevated road project, designed to improve connectivity between Noida and Delhi, is facing fresh uncertainty as a dispute over steel quality and unpaid dues threatens to push back its completion by up to six months.

According to project insiders, tensions have escalated between the Noida Authority and the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation, the executing agency for the flyover. The Authority has raised concerns over the use of what it claims is substandard steel in the structure, warning that it could compromise the project’s safety and longevity.

In addition to the quality concerns, the disagreement is compounded by financial issues, with the bridge corporation alleging that the Authority has not cleared payments totalling nearly ₹100 crore. These unpaid dues, the corporation asserts, have already hampered the pace of construction and placed added strain on contractors and suppliers involved in the project.

The bridge corporation, however, has rejected the allegations about steel quality, maintaining that all material used fully complies with national standards. Representatives have emphasised that the project’s steel supply underwent the required quality checks and certifications before being incorporated into the construction.

The Chilla flyover is a key infrastructure initiative aimed at reducing travel time between Noida and the capital, easing congestion on one of the busiest routes in the National Capital Region. Any delay in its completion is expected to have a knock-on effect on traffic flow, particularly during peak commuting hours.

Stakeholders are now urging both parties to resolve the dispute swiftly to prevent prolonged disruptions. With the project already under tight timelines, further delays could escalate costs and erode public confidence in the execution of major infrastructure works.
