Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has taken a significant step towards developing Phase III of the Metro network. It has issued a request for proposal (RFP) for consultancy services to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed line connecting Aluva to Angamaly via the airport. The RFP follows the in-principle approval from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for central financial assistance (CFA) for the DPR preparation.
According to KMRL’s preliminary plan, the 18-km Phase III extension will begin at Aluva and follow National Highway 544 towards Aleena Valavu near Akaparambu, continuing along Kariyad-Airport-Mattoor Road to the airport. From there, it will proceed along Angamaly-Airport Road, following the MC Road until reaching Angamaly. An underground stretch of 3 km will be constructed at Nedumbassery, with around 15 stations planned along the route.
The RFP also calls for evaluating the feasibility of implementing Phase III as an independent line instead of extending the existing Tripunithura-Aluva corridor. The consultant will also explore the potential for using different rolling stock and provisions for the future extension of the line towards the proposed Kochi GIFT City.
