Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has approved the transfer of 786 hectares of land to Mihan India Limited (MIL) for the expansion of Nagpur’s Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. The land, extending to Air India’s aircraft maintenance depot in Mihan-SEZ, will facilitate the airport’s brownfield expansion under a concessionaire agreement signed between MIL and GMR Group.
The land transfer is expected to be completed by April 2025, allowing construction to begin. However, MADC must first rehabilitate residents in Shivangaon and nearby areas. With a 51% stake in MIL, MADC is collaborating with GMR to enhance airport infrastructure, including new terminals, parking, and a second runway.
Chairman and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted state investments in night landing facilities and runway expansions to ease urban airport congestion. MADC is also set to manage five other airports in Maharashtra—Yavatmal, Baramati, Nanded, Osmanabad, and Latur—formerly operated by Reliance Airport Developers Limited. Fadnavis expressed optimism about accelerating regional airport development.
