The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is preparing to open a new phase of the Metro 3 network, extending services to the Acharya Atre Chowk station in Worli by March 2025. This extension will connect six key stations — Dharavi, Shitladevi, Dadar, Siddhi Vinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk — all situated in high-traffic areas that include educational institutions, religious landmarks, commercial zones, and corporate offices.
The director of projects at MMRC, S K Gupta, confirmed that work on the 9.7-kilometre stretch is progressing. Track laying and Overhead Catenary System (OHE) installation are already complete. The remaining work, including architectural finishes and signalling systems, is expected to be finished shortly. Trial runs have already begun, with trains now operational in both directions to gather data for software updates.
To meet the deadline, MMRC is seeking approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). Given that the rolling stock had already been cleared during Phase I trials, MMRC anticipates a smoother approval process. This new phase, expected to significantly improve public transport accessibility in these high-density areas, will also increase Phase I’s daily ridership, which currently records about 22,000 passengers. The next segment, linking BKC to Colaba, is expected to open by May 2025.
