The long-awaited Yellow Line of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is slated to begin operations in late January 2025 with three initial trains. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials have confirmed the delivery of one train set in December and another in January. Delays, despite the completion of civil, electrical, and signalling work, are due to a shortage of train sets. Titagarh Wagons, the supplier, has pledged to deliver 15 six-coach trains by August 2025, with the first two arriving soon.
Initially, the line will operate at 30-minute intervals, increasing frequency as more trains become available. The 18.82 km Yellow Line, featuring 16 stations and driverless trains, connects RV Road and Bommasandra. Technical clearances for signalling, traction, and braking systems have already been secured, with safety inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) expected by January 2025.
Titagarh Wagons is contracted to deliver 36 trains, with 35 yet to arrive. One will be imported from China, and the rest manufactured in West Bengal. Of the 216 coaches planned, 126 are allocated to the Purple and Green Lines, and 90 to the Yellow Line.
However, concerns persist about infrastructure at Bommasandra station, a critical hub for commuters to Jigani, Bommasandra, Chandapura, and Attibele. The lack of a pedestrian pathway has drawn public criticism, and BMRCL faces pressure to address these accessibility issues.
Once fully operational, the Yellow Line is expected to greatly enhance connectivity for Bengaluru’s southern industrial and residential areas.
