Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) have partnered to develop an underground metro line connecting Nedumbassery, enhancing the link between the airport and the metro network. This project aims to streamline travel for passengers arriving at Cochin International Airport, reducing reliance on road transport and easing traffic congestion around the airport area.
The 2-kilometer underground extension will provide domestic and international travelers with a fast, direct metro route to Kochi’s central metro lines, saving significant travel time by bypassing road traffic. This initiative marks a first for Kerala, as it creates a direct metro connection for the airport.
Aligned with Kerala’s sustainability goals, the project will reduce vehicular emissions and promote green mobility. KMRL will provide technical and engineering support, while CIAL will manage land and logistics within the airport. Known for its solar-powered operations, CIAL’s focus on energy efficiency will influence the design of the metro extension.
The project is poised to set a benchmark for smart urban infrastructure and address future mobility challenges as passenger numbers grow. Once completed, this metro line will significantly improve regional connectivity and passenger experience, furthering Kerala’s commitment to sustainable, progressive infrastructure.
