Reliance Industries Ltd has announced plans to launch its first solar giga-factory within the current fiscal year, targeting an initial 20GW solar PV capacity by the end of 2024-25. This initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2035, which includes developing renewable energy and battery storage facilities to reduce import reliance.

The giga-factory will produce solar PV modules, cells, wafers, ingots, polysilicon, and glass, all at a single location. Additionally, Reliance aims to industrialize sodium-ion cell production at the MW level in 2025 and start a 50 MWh annual lithium battery cell pilot in 2026. The company has also committed to investing USD 10 billion over three years to establish four giga-factories at Jamnagar, Gujarat, for manufacturing renewables equipment, battery storage, fuel cells, and hydrogen.

Reliance’s 2024-25 goals include commissioning the first 20GW train of module and cell manufacturing, scaling up to 20GW by 2026, and setting up a lithium battery cell pilot. By FY27, the company plans to establish a 50 GWh cell-to-pack manufacturing facility and achieve 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, positioning itself alongside global leaders in renewables.

The company highlights the need for cost-effective, stable green power as India faces rising fossil fuel costs and import dependencies. Reliance aims to address this challenge by focusing on new energy manufacturing and developing a local supply chain to enhance self-sufficiency.
