Construction for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai has officially commenced at Thoppur, following environmental clearance from the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), Tamil Nadu, as announced on Tuesday.

The ceremonial event marking the start of construction was attended by key officials from AIIMS and L&T. Phase one of the project, which includes the medical college, hostels, OPD, IPD, emergency block, and other essential services, is set to be completed within 18 months, with the entire project expected to be finished in 33 months.

The total project cost for AIIMS Madurai has increased from Rs 1,977.80 crore to Rs 2,021.51 crore. Spanning a built-up area of 231,782 square metres and comprising 42 blocks, the facility will feature 900 beds, including a specialised 150-bed block for infectious diseases and a 30-bed AYUSH block to integrate Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy with mainstream medical care.

This project will establish a high-quality tertiary care hospital with 900 beds, accommodating an additional 5,000 out-patients.

The Executive Director of AIIMS Madurai emphasised that this institute is part of the prestigious AIIMS network, aimed at providing high-standard healthcare, comprehensive medical education, and innovative research.

Designed to become a premier medical institution in South India, AIIMS Madurai will enhance the healthcare landscape through excellence and innovation. The institute will feature state-of-the-art OPD, IPD, emergency block, auditorium, medical college, nursing college, hostels, and residential complexes for staff.
