Larsen & Toubro’s Buildings Business recently completed a groundbreaking project, constructing a 7-storey Flight Control System (FCS) Integration Facility for the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in an astonishingly short span of 45 days. Utilizing their innovative Integrated Hybrid Modular Construction Technology (IHMCT), the facility represents a significant achievement in rapid construction, showcasing India’s capability in fast-track infrastructure development.
The inauguration of this state-of-the-art facility on March 17, 2022, by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside dignitaries including Basavaraj Bommai, Chief Minister of Karnataka, and Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Secretary Department of Defence R&D & Chairman, DRDO, underscores its strategic importance. Praising the project, DRDO Chairman Dr. G Satheesh Reddy emphasized the collaborative effort between DRDO and L&T, with design checks and technical support from teams at IIT-Madras and IIT-Roorkee.
The success of this project was made possible by L&T’s unique integrated offsite and onsite construction approach. Whole Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Buildings) of L&T, Mr. M V Satish, highlighted the adoption of IHMCT, a pioneering construction technology in India, which significantly reduced the construction cycle time. The project, which commenced on February 1st, 2022, was completed on schedule, encompassing the superstructure, modular interiors, façade, and MEP services, all within the 45-day timeframe.
Covering a total built-up area of 130,000 sq. feet, the project required seamless coordination with 21 off-site locations to integrate design, structure, architecture, and MEP services. Looking ahead, L&T’s IHMCT is poised to revolutionize construction practices, enhancing productivity, optimizing resource utilization, reducing wastage, and accelerating construction timelines.
