Patna Airport, also known as Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport, is currently undergoing a comprehensive modernization effort to meet the rising demands of passenger traffic. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has embarked on this ambitious project, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,216.90 crore, aimed at transforming the airport into a modern aviation hub. The modernization project is scheduled to be completed by March 2023.
One of the key components of the modernization project is the construction of a new integrated Terminal Building. This state-of-the-art facility will feature 52 check-in counters, an in-line baggage handling system, and five conveyor belts for arriving passengers. Additionally, the terminal will be equipped with five aerobridges, ensuring smooth and efficient boarding and disembarkation processes for passengers.
The modernization project also includes the development of a Cargo Complex, a Multi-Level Car Parking facility, an Air Traffic Control-cum-Technical Building, and a new Apron with 14 aircraft parking bays. These infrastructure enhancements are aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger experience at the airport.
Upon completion, the modernized Patna Airport will have a total area of 7,00,000 square feet, with a separate departure (upper) and arrival (lower) levels. The departure level will be connected via a flyover to the airport’s entry gate, providing easy access for passengers. Additionally, a link bridge will connect the departure level to the multi-level car parking facility, ensuring convenient parking for passengers.
The new integrated Terminal Building is designed to be a 4-Star GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) rated energy-efficient building. It will not only offer modern amenities and facilities but also showcase the art and culture of Bihar through its interiors.
In addition to the new terminal building, the modernization project also includes the development of commercial space spanning 62,000 square feet. This space will house world-class shopping facilities, adding to the overall passenger experience at the airport.
As an interim measure to address the growing passenger traffic, the existing terminal building is being extended and modified. These enhancements are expected to reduce waiting times and improve passenger movement within the airport premises.
Patna Airport has witnessed significant growth in passenger traffic over the last five years, emerging as one of India’s fastest-growing airports. With the completion of the modernization project, the airport is poised to further enhance its position as a key aviation hub in the region, catering to the growing needs of passengers and airlines alike.
