Besides strength checks, vibrations due to rhythmic and walking accelerations were considered by plotting peak accelerations as per AISC design guide 11.
Brief
The Government of Meghalaya with its visionary leadership under chief minister Mr. Conrad Kongkal Sangma have issued interest in developing an integrates sports complex consisting of football stadium, swimming pool and squash court with international standards. Hindustan steel works construction Ltd had issued tender for the same.
Initial Thought
The idea was to ensure that the proposed football stadium seating capacity had to be a combination of permanent seating and temporary modular seating with scope of expansion in future. Easily dismountable aluminum modular stands were proposed;however, the same was revised in cold formed steel framed bleachers which were light and cost efficient.
Using Steel
The project required fast track construction for which steel was initially explored as potential option. However, the location being highly seismic prone, lighter structure was finalized as final option which also paid rich dividends in reduced foundation costs. Also, light gauge steel framed walls are used for all partition rooms.
Architectural Features
The stadium is treated with two tier gallery seating with over 15m cantilever roof truss over gallery. There is a three-tier gallery in middle which hosts VIP seating, broadcasting, and media rooms with camera platform. The stadium lighting is planned as an independent tower complying the FIFA norms.

Learnings
This is the first time ever that cold formed steel is extensively used in a stadium project as bleacher. Considering the cost on raiser cladding for fire rating, the overall cost of the structure is as close as RCC framed building. However, the foundations costs were cut down to half with proposed steel structure as compared to RCC. This also reduced overall structure cost by 20 per cent. However, the pace at which the project is taking off is the standout.With the foundations stated on April, the football stadium is close to completion within a year time.
“Usage of structural steel composite columns and floor is currently popular method for economic design. However cold formed steel is often overlooked in major assembly spaces as floor system. To maintain the thread and rise of the bleachers, usage of cold formed steel yielded excellent takeoff and ensuring good rigidity for the stands. Infact the exposed webs are prepunched to fix modular seating specific to required architectural positioning.”
