Christopher Cooter, High Commissioner of Canada to India, met Sandeep Poundrik, Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India, to discuss strengthening bilateral collaboration in the steel sector, with a focus on trade, technology, and long-term investment opportunities.
The discussions underscored shared interest in expanding cooperation across the steel trade, raw material security, and sustainable manufacturing. Opportunities to enhance bilateral trade in steel and related materials were explored, alongside collaboration on sourcing critical inputs such as coking coal to support India’s domestic steel capacity. Both sides also examined avenues for technology exchange, including advanced steelmaking processes, digitalisation, and green steel solutions aligned with India’s decarbonisation goals.
Potential partnerships in joint ventures, research and development, and supply chain optimisation were also highlighted. Canada’s expertise in mining and resource management was seen as complementary to India’s rapidly expanding steel and infrastructure ecosystem.
While no formal agreements were concluded, both parties expressed confidence in progressing towards technical discussions and collaborative initiatives, signalling growing momentum in India–Canada industrial engagement within the steel sector.
