Home Minister Lays Foundation Stone for Assam Legislative Assembly Building in Dibrugarh

The foundation stone of the new building of the Assam Legislative Assembly was laid by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The foundation-laying ceremony took place in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, and other senior officials.

The foundation stone for the new Legislative Assembly complex has been laid on 57 bighas of land, with the total project cost estimated at around ₹1,715 crore. While addressing the gathering, the Home Minister spoke about how Assam will benefit from the Free Trade Agreement signed between India and Europe, and said that the government is focusing on the development of Assam across sectors such as infrastructure, airports, waterways, wildlife, and other key areas.

Shah also referred to Assam’s rivers as central to the state’s culture, economy, and agriculture, and highlighted the steps taken to mitigate floods. He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has allocated ₹692 crore in the first phase for the development of 15 large wetlands, which will help protect around 7.5 lakh people from floods, irrigate nearly 77,000 hectares of land, improve groundwater levels, and support agriculture, animal husbandry, and tourism.
