Construction of a modern hanging bridge on the Chambal River, connecting Bhind in Madhya Pradesh with Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, is set to begin in late January. Modeled after Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the project will replace a 50-year-old bridge that has faced significant deterioration over the past 15 years. Expected to be completed within two years, the bridge will enhance regional trade and transportation by linking the Atal Progress-Way in Madhya Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand Expressway.
Approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in 2020, the project has a budget of Rs 296 crore, with Rs 130 crore allocated for the bridge and Rs 166 crore for an 8.1 km four-lane road from the Yamuna River to the Chambal bridge. The new road will include dividers and streetlights to ensure safer commutes.
The bridge will span 594 meters with a width of 14 meters and stand at a height of over 130 meters, 122 meters taller than the old bridge. Utilizing cables for the main span, the structure will incorporate concrete, steel, and precast segments. Delhi-based ASC Infratech Limited is managing the construction, with permissions granted in July 2023 after addressing environmental concerns within the National Chambhal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary.
