The redevelopment of Belval, Luxembourg, has led to the successful transformation of an old industrial site into a sustainable urban centre, the Kyklos Building. The centre will house a university and a technological centre, along with hotels, retail, offices and residential spaces. This project is the centrepiece of the Agora Masterplan, positioned centrally with the development next to Place des Bassins.

Kyklos features a central circular core, reflecting its Greek translation – ‘circle.’ UNStudio’s proposal for this structure aims to create minimal carbon footprint. The early prototype of Carbon Builder was used which helped reduce the carbon footprint of this building by approximately 80 per cent.

Carbon Builder is a tool which helped enhance sustainable design practices, by integrating a comprehensive framework to optimise the carbon footprint of a building. It evaluates various elements of design, materials, and construction methods, and provides insights into reducing environmental impact.

Two main elements that drove the design of Kyklos were urban integration and a holistic sustainable approach, from the techniques to materials. The idea behind opting for a hybrid steel-concrete structure was so it would offer superior long-term carbon performance. The steel that would be used in this project is recycled and produced locally which would also help improve concrete’s performance. The design links two basins – remnants of the old steelworks site where the district is developed – through a singular ‘infinity loop’. The design of this structure symbolises the fusion of the industrial heritage with its transformation into a modern urban area.

Various strategies have been implemented to maximise transparency and daylight, achieving 90 per cent glazing on the floor and 80 per cent on the upper levels. One setback on a corner of the lower floors creates an overhang that helps to mitigate overheating. The floor plates extend from a central circular core and are supported by steel cables and the design accommodates future modifications as well.

With its emphasis on sustainability, innovative design, and seamless integration into the urban fabric, the Kyklos Building stands as a prime example of successful urban regeneration and a beacon for future sustainable development.
