The Airports Authority of India has invited bids for the Rs 42.52 crore development and upgrade of Saharsa airport, taking forward plans to improve air connectivity in Bihar’s Kosi region. The project is expected to prepare the existing airport for Code 2B category aircraft, with construction scheduled for completion within 450 days.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the tender as a historic step towards providing air connectivity to Saharsa and a major achievement for the entire Kosi region. He said 12 acres of land is being provided by the state government at a cost of Rs 147 crore, paving the way for swift air connectivity across the region.
The proposed works will cover the airport’s main airside infrastructure, including the runway, taxiway and apron, along with a perimeter road, ground support equipment area, vehicular lane, emergency access road and other safety-related facilities. The development will also include a Runway End Safety Area and runway basic strip.
Runway expansion will require additional land. The state will bear the acquisition expense and subsequently transfer the land to AAI for the airport development. Choudhary has directed officials to expedite the acquisition so that the required land can be made available on time.
