India has outlined a ₹45,000 crore investment plan to expand and strengthen railway infrastructure along its borders with China, Pakistan and Bangladesh, targeting states including Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam.
The initiative focuses on constructing new tracks and upgrading existing networks near sensitive frontier zones, with a dual purpose of improving civilian connectivity and supporting military logistics. Key areas include the Siliguri Corridor and Himalayan regions, where all-weather rail links will enable faster troop mobilisation and more resilient supply chains in challenging terrain.
The project forms part of a broader, long-term effort to enhance connectivity in India’s frontier zones, aligning with past investments in border airfields and road networks. The scale of the initiative is expected to generate strong demand for steel, cement and engineering services as tenders are rolled out for construction in remote border areas.
The infrastructure push also reflects India’s strategic priority of building robust, dual-use connectivity infrastructure that can serve both economic development and national security objectives across its most sensitive geographic regions.
