₹28,740 Cr Boost from Union Budget 2026 for the metro railway sector

Central funding for India’s metro rail and mass rapid transit network in the Union Budget 2026 totals Rs 28,740 crore for projects in FY 2027. This budget beneficiates the Lucknow Metro Phase 1B project among others, by allocating Rs 1450 crore.

This corridor spans 11.165km from Lucknow Railway Station (Charbagh) to Vasant Kunj covering 12 stations. Out of these 12 stations, 5 stations will be elevated while 7 stations will be underground. The Union Cabinet approved the Phase 1B project on 12 August at an estimated cost of Rs 5,801 crore.

The budget also has allocated Rs 517 crore for the ongoing Pune metro project. However, a detailed break-up of the funds is still awaited. The budget has also committed Rs 5,000 crore to the Pune Growth Hub over the next five years.

A clearer implementation roadmap will be drawn up once the Centre formally communicates the funding structure and timelines.
