Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been transformed from a lending body into a key engine of large-scale infrastructure development under the BJP-led Mahayuti government. Addressing an election rally in Kalyan ahead of the January 15 Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) polls, he said projects worth nearly ₹4 lakh crore have been initiated through MMRDA, covering water supply schemes, roads and a rapidly expanding metro network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Highlighting major commuter-focused announcements, Fadnavis said all Mumbai local trains will eventually be upgraded with AC coaches and closed doors, similar to metro services, while assuring that second-class fares will not increase. He described projects such as the Airoli–Katai Naka Freeway, multimodal corridors and east–west connectivity tunnels as “game changers” that will significantly reduce travel time for residents of Kalyan and Dombivli.
The Chief Minister also announced plans to develop a major business hub in the region, alongside the bullet train ecosystem and new data centres, to create large-scale employment.
