NHAI Issues ₹2,243 Crore Tender for Four-Lane Mokama–Munger Highway in Bihar

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has floated tenders for the construction of the 82.4-kilometre four-lane Mokama–Munger highway section of National Highway-33 (NH-33), with an estimated project cost of ₹2,243 crore, according to a report. The project is a key part of Bihar’s infrastructure development plan and is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and support freight movement, especially for industries such as steel and construction.

The proposed highway stretch will feature greenfield alignment integrated with the upcoming expressway network, enhancing transport efficiency and reducing travel time between industrial zones in central and eastern Bihar. This corridor is strategically aligned to improve logistics for heavy industries, particularly steel transportation and related supply chains, which rely on uninterrupted and high-capacity road networks.

Land acquisition for the project is already underway, with district officials coordinating with affected landowners to ensure a timely and smooth process. Construction is likely to begin within the next two months, following the finalisation of contractors through the bidding process.

Officials stated that the highway would include state-of-the-art design features such as elevated sections, bypasses, service roads, and safety systems to accommodate high-speed traffic and reduce congestion. The infrastructure is also expected to decongest existing roadways and improve access to upcoming industrial hubs, including those housing steel processing and logistics units.

Once completed, the Mokama–Munger highway will serve as a vital link between key economic zones in Bihar, enhancing the movement of raw materials and finished goods. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities during its construction phase and boost ancillary services in the region.
