The National Highways Logistics Management (NHLML) and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a state-of-the-art multi-modal logistics park (MMLP) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The 150-acre logistics park, strategically located 30 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, will play a key role in boosting India’s logistics infrastructure and improving the efficiency of goods transportation.

The logistics park will be seamlessly integrated with the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor via a 5.1 km railway line from Jeonathpur Station and National Waterway-1, providing crucial connectivity for goods movement. Additionally, the park is directly connected to NH7 through a 650-meter access road and lies just 1.5 km from the NH7-NH2 junction, ensuring easy and efficient transportation links.

The project is in line with the road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari’s goal of reducing India’s logistics costs from the current 14-16 per cent to 9 per cent within the next two years. This reduction aims to enhance the competitiveness of Indian products in the global market.

Currently, logistics costs in China are around eight per cent, and in the US and Europe, they are about 12 per cent, making it challenging for Indian exports to compete effectively on the international stage.
