The expansion of Chennai International Airport is progressing rapidly, with the second phase of the new integrated terminal expected to be operational by March 2026. Initially scheduled for completion in July 2025, the deadline was later revised by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to ensure the seamless execution of the Rs 2,467 crore project.
The expansion, which began in 2018, aims to increase the airport’s annual capacity from 2.3 crore to 3.5 crore passengers. The first phase, covering 1.36 lakh square meters, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023. However, only a portion of the new terminal has been accessible to international travellers.
The second phase will introduce a larger terminal area with enhanced passenger facilities. The new terminal will include eight entry gates, 60 check-in counters, 10 scanning screens, and eight aerobridges equipped with modern technology. Additionally, an upgraded conveyor belt system will improve baggage claim efficiency, reducing waiting times.
Currently, the airport operates with three terminals—1, 2, and 4. The introduction of Terminal 3 will expand overall capacity and support over 500 daily flights. With these upgrades, Chennai International Airport is set to become a more efficient and traveller-friendly hub by 2026.
