Ludhiana’s industrial sector is eagerly awaiting the operational launch of Halwara Airport, which is expected to address the city’s long-standing need for better air connectivity. The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertaking (CICU) has actively supported this initiative by proposing a plan to Air India, assuring the purchase of 50% of the flight tickets for the first three months of operations. With over 30,000 members and 36 affiliated associations, CICU emphasized the airport’s potential to benefit industries such as knitwear, auto parts, and machine tools by saving travel time and facilitating easier access for senior executives and NRIs.

The lack of adequate air travel options has been a significant challenge for Ludhiana’s business community. CICU highlighted that over 4,000 taxis travel daily to Delhi for business trips, which take around seven hours by road. Halwara Airport’s operationalization is expected to drastically reduce this time, reduce travel fatigue, and boost industrial productivity. The airport’s capacity to handle large planes, unlike the Sahnewal Airport, could also attract IT companies and further industrial investments to the city.

The United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA) and the steel industry have similarly expressed frustration over delays in the project. UCPMA president Harsimerjit Singh Lucky noted the challenges posed by poor air connectivity, such as extended travel times and safety concerns on road journeys to Delhi. He urged the government to expedite the project and expand flight routes to key domestic and international cities. Lokesh Jain, chairman of Ludhiana CII, emphasized the airport’s role in fostering growth, attracting customers, and supporting international business conferences. He added that better connectivity could lead to the establishment of convention centers, luxury hotels, and an overall economic boost for Ludhiana.

According to Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal, 100% of the civil work at the Halwara Airport terminal has been completed, including roads, campus lighting, and parking facilities. Coordination with the Indian Air Force has been intensified to complete pending last-mile connectivity work on its campus. Air India has reportedly committed to commencing flight operations once the airport receives all necessary approvals.

With its strategic location and potential for comprehensive connectivity, Halwara Airport is poised to catalyze Ludhiana’s industrial growth, making travel safer, faster, and more efficient for businesses and residents alike.
