In 2007, CIDCO proposed the construction of a second airport in Mumbai’s Metropolitan Region (MMR) to alleviate pressure on the existing international airport. After overcoming hurdles such as land acquisition and environmental clearances, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is now 63% complete, with plans for commercial operations by March 31, 2025.
CIDCO, holding a 24% stake in NMIA, has completed pre-development works and handed over the site to the private concessionaire responsible for construction. The project, encompassing phases 1 and 2, aims to accommodate 20 million passengers annually and handle 0.8 million tonnes of cargo per year.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Civil Aviation Minister, expressed confidence in meeting the 2025 deadline during his visit in January 2024. The NMIAL spokesperson affirmed that work is progressing well.
Approved by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 2007, the NMIA project is being developed through PPP. CIDCO selected Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) as the preferred bidder, with CIDCO and MIAL holding 26% and 74% equity, respectively.
NMIA, set to handle 90 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo annually, is poised to be a significant economic catalyst for the region, creating around 100,000 direct and indirect jobs.
