Assam rail infrastructure witnessing major transformation: NFR

Assam’s rail infrastructure is witnessing a major transformation driven by sustained investment, modern technology and passenger-focused upgrades, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said.

Railway development in the state has been prioritised since 2014, leading to expanded connectivity and higher capacity. Over the past five years, 416 km of new track has been added, including the Bilasipara–Abhayapuri line, along with 366 km of doubling works. Assam now has 2,571 route kilometres and 4,199 track kilometres.

Electrification has reached around 95%, enabling long-distance trains such as the Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express and the Dibrugarh–New Delhi Rajdhani Express to run fully on electric traction. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 50 stations are being redeveloped, with Haibargaon newly built.

The state has also joined India’s semi-high-speed network with the Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express, with more Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat services planned. Safety, sustainability and technology adoption remain key focus areas.
