Steel Authority of India Limited has given in-principle approval for the capacity expansion of its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh from 6.8 million tonnes per annum to 10.2 MTPA, at an estimated cost of Rs 31,000 crore. The project is scheduled for completion within 42 months.
The Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management agreement for the project has been signed with MECON. All major raw materials will be sourced from SAIL’s captive mines alongside domestic and imported sources. The expansion is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment during both construction and operational phases.
Bhilai Steel Plant is SAIL’s flagship integrated steel production facility and the exclusive supplier of rails to Indian Railways, manufacturing the world’s longest single-piece rails at 130 metres from its Universal Rail Mill. The plant also produces heavy structural steel products including beams, plates and sheets.
The expansion aligns with India’s National Steel Policy targeting 300 million tonnes of domestic steel capacity by 2030, with Parliament informed of the approval by Minister of State for Steel Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa.
