Crossover Planned at Shahid Khudiram Metro Station to Ensure Service Continuity

Metro Railway authorities in Kolkata are set to construct a crossover at Shahid Khudiram Metro Station to ensure uninterrupted train operations during the planned temporary closure of Kavi Subhash station. The move is designed to maintain smooth service flow and operational flexibility on the busy north–south corridor.

Engineers have confirmed that work will commence once the final design is approved and Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) alignments are finalised. The crossover will enable trains to switch tracks, allowing efficient management of services without causing significant delays to passengers.

A key component of the project will be the use of high-grade steel in track switches, turnout assemblies, and fastening systems. Steel’s durability, load-bearing capacity, and resistance to wear make it essential for railway track infrastructure, particularly in high-frequency metro systems. Additionally, fabricated steel components will be employed for the structural framework supporting the crossover, ensuring long-term stability and safety.

Preliminary estimates suggest that, once clearances are secured, construction could be completed within a month. This accelerated schedule aims to minimise inconvenience for commuters while maintaining high safety standards.

While the crossover addresses an immediate operational need during the Kavi Subhash closure, it will also serve as a long-term asset—providing an extra point of track change for future maintenance, diversions, or emergencies.

The Kolkata Metro, India’s oldest rapid transit system, continues to modernise through projects that integrate advanced engineering solutions with robust materials. For the steel industry, such metro upgrades represent a growing demand segment—supplying rails, structural steel, reinforcement bars, and precision-fabricated components critical to urban transport infrastructure.
