Mumbai’s first underground metro, the Metro 3 (Aqua Line), is set to extend its services deeper into the city, reaching Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli) by April 10. This expansion will allow passengers to travel along a 22-km underground corridor from Aarey to Worli for a one-way fare of Rs 60, enhancing connectivity and easing road congestion.

With this phase, six new metro stations will be added to the existing route between Aarey and Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), providing a much-needed alternative to busy roads like Lady Jamshedji Road and Dr Annie Besant Road. Commuters will enjoy seamless access to key business hubs, including SEEPZ, MIDC, Andheri-Kurla Road, BKC, and Worli, while also improving connectivity to residential areas and prominent religious landmarks such as Siddhivinayak Temple, St. Michael’s Church, Hazrat Makhdum Fakih Ali Mahimi’s shrine, and Shitaladevi Temple.

Metro 3’s first phase was inaugurated on October 5, 2024, with public operations beginning two days later. The second phase has already been approved by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO), expediting the process before the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) conducts its inspection. Ahead of this, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has started train movements between Dharavi and Acharya Atre Chowk.

Since its launch, the first phase of Metro 3 has recorded a total ridership of over 2.6 million across nearly 30,000 trips, averaging around 19,600 passengers daily. The full 33.5-km corridor, stretching from Aarey to Cuffe Parade, is expected to be operational by July 2025. A key milestone was achieved on February 28 with a successful trial run on the final 10.99-km stretch to Cuffe Parade.

As the April extension nears completion, Mumbai’s commuters eagerly await faster travel times, better transit options, and reduced traffic congestion across the city.
