The North East Frontier Railway (NEFR) is advancing its sustainability efforts with a 3.2 MW rooftop solar installation project across multiple locations, including railway stations and buildings in Guwahati.

This initiative aligns with NEFR’s broader push to adopt renewable energy, contributing to Indian Railways’ target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The solar panels will reduce electricity costs, enhance energy efficiency, and support non-traction energy needs like station lighting. Part of a larger plan to install 20 GW of solar capacity across the network, this project highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to clean energy.

Beyond energy savings, this project exemplifies how transportation infrastructure can integrate sustainability, showcasing the railways’ role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while driving India’s clean energy transition. By adopting solar energy, Indian Railways strengthens its position as a leader in sustainable development and infrastructure modernisation.

The tender process has been announced, inviting bidders for installation and maintenance and promising environmental and economic benefits.
