Indian Railways, under the leadership of Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced a Rs 16,240 crore investment plan to modernize the nation’s railway infrastructure. At the heart of this initiative is the redevelopment of Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project seeks to enhance passenger amenities, preserve the station’s architectural heritage, and improve urban connectivity.
The revamped CSMT will feature expanded platforms, air-conditioned waiting areas, escalators, advanced ticketing systems, and enhanced lighting, all designed to cater to the needs of thousands of daily commuters. By integrating modern facilities with the station’s historical legacy, the redevelopment aims to strike a balance between heritage preservation and contemporary functionality.
Sustainability is a core focus of the project, with provisions for renewable energy solutions, water recycling systems, and green building practices. These measures ensure the redevelopment is environmentally responsible while supporting Mumbai’s growing urban demands.
In addition to upgrading CSMT, the investment will significantly boost Mumbai’s local train network. Plans include 301 km of new tracks, 300 additional trains, and the introduction of advanced signaling technology (Kavach 5.0), which will reduce train intervals and improve operational efficiency.
This comprehensive redevelopment effort promises to ease congestion, enhance commuter experiences, and support economic growth. It reflects the government’s commitment to creating world-class infrastructure and modernizing urban transport systems across the country.
