Chennai’s innovative double-decker Metro project, a flagship endeavor in Corridor 4, is advancing steadily towards its final stages. This groundbreaking initiative in India will uniquely host both Metro lines on a shared pier system, serving four key stations—Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam—across two distinct levels, covering a total stretch of 5 km.
As reported by CMRL officials, nearly all piling work, amounting to 99%, and a substantial portion, 78%, of the pile cap installations have been completed. The elevated corridor, spanning 3.75 km, features an intricate double-decker structure, overcoming significant design complexities and spatial constraints.
Despite initial challenges and delays associated with land acquisition and utility diversions, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), in collaboration with contractors, has made remarkable progress. Currently, significant milestones include the erection of multiple pier arms and the installation of U-girders along the corridor’s spans.
Upon completion, Chennai’s double-decker Metro promises to revolutionize urban transport, enhancing connectivity and commuter convenience across the bustling city.
