UDAN 2.0 Charts Next Phase of Regional Air Connectivity

India’s regional aviation network is set for a major expansion, with the Union Cabinet approving UDAN 2.0, a revamped version of the UDAN Scheme aimed at scaling connectivity across underserved regions.

To be implemented from 2026–27 to 2035–36, the programme targets the development of around 100 airports by upgrading existing airstrips. Alongside this, 200 modern helipads are planned, particularly in remote, hilly, and island regions where last-mile access remains a challenge.

The scheme carries a total outlay of ₹28,840 crore, with investments directed not just at infrastructure creation but also long-term operational viability. Financial support will continue through viability gap funding to encourage airlines to operate on less commercially attractive routes.

A notable addition is the push for indigenous aviation assets, including aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, such as Dornier planes and Dhruv helicopters, aimed at improving connectivity in difficult terrains.

Since its launch in 2016, UDAN has already operationalised hundreds of routes. With UDAN 2.0, the focus shifts from access to scale, turning regional connectivity into a more resilient and sustained network.
