Kochi Metro Phase 3 eyes 8 km underground airport link with integrated tunnel hub

The proposed Phase 3 expansion of the Kochi Metro Rail Limited is set to significantly reshape urban connectivity in central Kerala, with plans for an underground corridor linking Aluva to Cochin International Airport and further to Angamaly.

A fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared to finalise alignment, station locations and engineering design. The current proposal expands earlier concepts, increasing the planned underground stretch from about 3 km to nearly 8 km around the airport zone, marking the first major underground component in the Kochi Metro network.

A key feature under consideration is the development of an integrated underground “tunnel hub” near the airport. The concept envisages seamless connectivity between the metro station, airport terminal access and a proposed railway station, all housed under one roof. The multi-modal interchange would enable direct transfers between air, rail and metro services without exposure to road traffic or weather conditions.

Project planners are also evaluating cost-optimised alternatives, including elevated or surface-level connectivity solutions such as covered walkways and electric buggy systems linking stations to airport terminals.

The final blueprint will weigh financial viability, engineering feasibility and safety considerations, particularly water management and structural resilience, before approvals are granted and construction timelines are defined.
