The Assam government plans to develop new airports at Majuli, Diphu, Umrangso and Manas, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stating that an agreement with the Union Civil Aviation Ministry will be signed in March to undertake feasibility studies. If viable, the facilities could be completed within five years and may even support water-landing aircraft operations in the state.
Alongside civil aviation expansion, the state is pushing strategic infrastructure across the Northeast. Following the inauguration of the region’s first emergency landing facility at Moran by Narendra Modi, Assam has requested additional ELFs that can be used for both defence and disaster-relief operations, particularly during floods.
Sarma also highlighted other strategic proposals, including the Numaligarh–Gohpur twin-tube road-rail tunnel and an underground corridor through the Siliguri Corridor (“Chicken’s Neck”), intended to maintain connectivity during emergencies. The state is further considering improved highway links connecting the upcoming semiconductor facility in Morigaon district to Bhutan.
Officials said these projects aim to strengthen security preparedness while also improving civilian mobility and regional connectivity.
