JSW Steel, India’s largest steelmaker by market value, is in discussions with South Korean major POSCO to jointly develop a new integrated steel plant in India. The proposed project, which is still under evaluation, is expected to be located in Odisha, a state that has emerged as a hub for large-scale steelmaking due to its mineral resources and strategic location.
The facility under consideration is projected to have a production capacity of six million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This would significantly enhance India’s domestic steel output at a time when demand is rising across infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing sectors. If realised, the project could rank among the largest collaborative ventures between Indian and South Korean steelmakers, combining JSW’s local presence and market knowledge with POSCO’s technological expertise.
This development follows JSW Steel’s previously announced plan to establish a five MTPA plant in Odisha, signalling the company’s long-term strategy to consolidate its footprint in the region. Odisha’s abundant iron ore reserves, proximity to ports, and supportive industrial policies make it an attractive destination for such high-capacity projects.
While financial arrangements and exact timelines have not yet been finalised, the talks reflect growing confidence in India’s steel sector, which has been buoyed by government infrastructure investments and sustained demand growth. Industry observers note that the partnership could not only expand production capacity but also strengthen supply chains, create employment, and spur the development of supporting infrastructure, including warehouses and logistics facilities.
If approved, the venture would represent another milestone in the deepening economic ties between India and South Korea, building on earlier industrial collaborations in energy, technology, and heavy manufacturing.
