The Punjab government is embarking on a significant clean energy initiative with plans to set up 66 solar power plants, each with a capacity of 4 MW. This ambitious project was announced by Aman Arora, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy Sources, who highlighted the state’s commitment to advancing renewable energy.

In a recent meeting chaired by Arora, alongside Power Minister Harbhajan Singh, senior officials from the departments of new and renewable energy sources, power, and the Punjab Development Commission convened to discuss the project’s strategies and implementation. The meeting focused on the detailed planning required to execute this major clean energy project efficiently.

The solar power plants are anticipated to generate around 390 million units (MU) of electricity annually. This substantial output is expected to significantly reduce the state’s reliance on conventional energy sources and contribute to its environmental sustainability goals. Additionally, the implementation of feeder-level solarisation is projected to result in annual savings of approximately Rs 1.36 billion, enhancing the economic benefits of the initiative.

The project is also set to attract investments totaling about Rs 1.56 billion, which will support the development of the solar infrastructure. This investment is expected to stimulate job creation in the non-conventional energy sector, providing employment opportunities for both skilled and semi-skilled workers. The Punjab government aims to leverage this initiative not only to bolster its clean energy capacity but also to foster economic growth and job creation in the region.
