Policy Shift: High-Tensile Stainless Steel Now Mandatory for Bridge Construction in India

In a major step toward enhancing infrastructure resilience, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, has announced new regulations mandating the use of high-tensile stainless steel in the construction of bridges especially in coastal regions and other climate-vulnerable zones. The directive is aimed at improving the longevity, structural integrity, and safety of national infrastructure in the face of increasing weather-related challenges.

This policy shift comes in response to a growing number of incidents involving corrosion and premature structural fatigue in traditional mild steel-based bridges, particularly in areas exposed to saline air, heavy rainfall, or high humidity. High-tensile stainless steel, known for its corrosion resistance and low maintenance requirements, offers a longer lifecycle and superior performance under extreme environmental conditions.

Officials from MoRTH stated that this move is aligned with India’s broader sustainability goals and will ensure safer and more durable public infrastructure. The use of stainless steel is also expected to reduce long-term costs associated with frequent repairs and retrofits. According to experts, incorporating such material not only enhances bridge safety but also supports India’s ambition of developing world-class road infrastructure that can withstand the stresses of climate change.

The government is also in talks with leading steel manufacturers to ensure availability and pricing stability as the new standards come into force. Pilot projects using high-tensile stainless steel have already shown promising results, especially in coastal states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Odisha.

This mandate represents a shift toward smarter materials in infrastructure planning and execution. It is expected to significantly impact the steel industry by encouraging higher production of value-added steel products while promoting innovation in bridge design and construction.
