The Export Import Federation Trichy (EIFT) has put forward an action plan aimed at enhancing the export potential of agro products from Trichy district. The plan highlights the need for a common export facilitation centre and a logistics park equipped with cold storage and other essential facilities.
Currently, exporters individually manage storage for perishable items like vegetables, fruits, and flowers when using Trichy Airport. EIFT’s proposal recommends establishing a centralized facility near the airport to streamline washing, packing, and quality maintenance for these commodities. This initiative, they argue, would encourage more entrepreneurs from Trichy and nearby districts to engage in exports.
The plan also emphasizes the growing international connectivity of Trichy Airport, which now handles over 100 services weekly. With the airport’s expansion paving the way for wide-body cargo aircraft, there is significant potential to boost exports. As agro commodities account for over 80% of the district’s exports, EIFT has sought state government funding under the proposed Rs 1,170 crore agro-industrial corridor for the Cauvery delta districts.
In addition to the facilitation centre, EIFT recommends setting up a logistics park and dry port with storage facilities, cold storage units, and offices for customs and GST officials. The proposed dry port, leveraging Trichy’s strong road network, could facilitate both imports and exports via Chennai and Tuticorin ports.
The district administration has acknowledged the proposal and requested EIFT to develop a detailed project report (DPR) for the export facilitation centre, signaling potential progress in bolstering the region’s export infrastructure.
