The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Metro Rail extension from Koyambedu to Avadi, part of the Madhavaram–Sholinganallur Corridor 5, is in its final stages and expected to be completed by the end of January. This 16.1-kilometer stretch will feature 15 elevated stations, connecting key transit points like Koyambedu, Padi Pudhu Nagar, Ambattur Estate, and Avadi railway station. Officials have also announced a feasibility study for extending the route further to Pattabiram, which, if implemented, would increase the total length to approximately 20 kilometers.
The extension to Pattabiram would not only add new stations but also improve connectivity to the Outer Ring Road area, enhancing transit options for commuters in suburban Chennai. The project’s estimated construction cost is ₹6,500 crore, with a metro depot planned for either Avadi or a location near the Outer Ring Road in Pattabiram. Authorities have assured that the feasibility study results for the Pattabiram extension will be submitted to the government within a month for evaluation.
This Metro Rail extension aims to significantly improve urban mobility in Chennai, connecting residential, industrial, and commercial hubs. Once complete, it is expected to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and offer a sustainable alternative to road-based transportation in the region.
