Nestled in a quaint alley in Hue city, Ton Corner Coffee Shop captures the spirit of simplicity and openness inspired by the humble charm of small street corners. The project replaced a deteriorating house with a raised steel structure to mitigate flooding, utilising corrugated iron, reclaimed wood, and tempered glass as primary materials. Given the leased, short-term nature of the land, the lightweight steel framework ensured efficient construction while reducing environmental impact.
Corrugated iron, often associated with industrial uses, was reimagined as a versatile material, thoughtfully treated to prevent water seepage and maintain aesthetic integrity. Paired with reclaimed wood, these materials strike a balance between modernity and tradition, ensuring the space feels neither overly industrial nor outdated. The flexibility of corrugated iron allowed for seamless coverage over large areas, creating a visually cohesive and functional design suited to Hue’s humid, rainy climate.
The layout emphasises ventilation and openness, introducing a fresh atmosphere to a city steeped in nostalgia. Glass is used extensively, but the design avoids excessive sunlight thanks to surrounding trees and neighbouring buildings. A spacious, high-ceilinged interior enhances the sense of airiness, while green spaces at the front and rear enrich the overall ambience. The old fence was replaced with a long bench spanning the facade, inviting passersby into the welcoming space.
The coffee shop’s interior flows effortlessly from the front alley through to the rear garden, maintaining a dynamic and airy atmosphere. The service block, constructed with steel and clad in reclaimed wood, forms a linear structure that ensures order and cleanliness. The two-storey design, featuring a mezzanine, maximises functionality and seating options. Upstairs, the cosy low-seating area offers privacy, while the second floor serves as a serene space for work, study, or group activities.
By blending sustainable materials with thoughtful design, Ton Corner Coffee Shop redefines the use of common materials, proving that simplicity, when executed with care, can elevate both aesthetics and functionality in residential and commercial architecture.
